About us

The Society for Medicinal Plants and Economic Development (SOMPED) is an association of academicians from all over the world that are involved in the promotion and perpetuation of interdisciplinary scientific studies of medicinal plants tailored towards economic development of the people of Africa in particular and the entire world in general. SOMPED is a network of researchers that are engaged in the promotion of collaboration, research partnerships and mentoring of young researchers in the advancement of medicinal plants research. The Society was established in 2016. Though its physical address is in South Africa, SOMPED does not belong to any institution or country. It is probably the first true and authentic scientific organization in Africa.

PUBLICATIONS

Journal of Medicinal Plants for Economic Development (JOMPED)

The Journal of Medicinal Plants for Economic Development (JOMPED) is the official publication of the Society for Medicinal Plants and Economic Development. It is dedicated to the dissemination of research information on the use of plants and plant products for economic and social development especially in the developing world. It publishes original research papers, critical reviews and communications on the latest developments in phytomedicine with strong emphasis on originality and scientific quality. Research findings in phytopharmacognosy, natural product research, herbal technology, phytochemistry, metagenomics of medicinal plants and toxicology that highlight economic development are considered for publication following critical and constructive review process.

PUBLICATION FREQUENCY

The journal publishes one issue each year. Articles are published online when ready for publication and then printed in an end-of-year compilation. Additional issues may be published for special events (e.g. conferences) and when special themes are addressed.

DHET ACCREDITATION

The journal is Department of Higher Education and Training, South Africa (DHET) accredited because it is listed on the following approved indexing services:

History

The idea to establish the Society for Medicinal Plants and Economic Development (SOMPED) was muted by the Founder, Emeritus Professor Anthony Jide Afolayan, in January 2016.The idea was put forward to the members of his research group including those that have completed their project and gone back to their respective stations. The picture shows the first meeting of the founding members of SOMPED in February 2016.

HOW TO JOIN SOMPED

Membership of the Organization is by a written application to the Management Committee through the General Secretary. The intending member should request for the application form from the General Secretary through: Secretary@somped.net; Registration for Membership is currently free, but membership of the Society is after the payment of the annual membership fee which is currently $50.00
